'Body of Water' 2023
Okkenbroek Lake installation for "van hier kunst tot ginder" by KunstenLab, metal, glass, plastic

Water, one of the elements that we need to survive and interact with multiple times a day; drinking, cooking, showering, when it's raining, in lakes, ponds, rivers, and the ocean. The body of water in each of those cases presents itself differently which is why the way we interact with it depends on its quality or the place we come across it. Inspired by the lake of Okkenbroek and the highly contrasted water of an ashtray left outside I decided to choose the topic of water. It took many sketches, experiments, and failures to come up with the final idea. Using recycled metal parts that resemble the plumbing system connected to glass and plastic containers that represent the human interaction with water. I collected water from many different ponds, lakes, and other places I came across which means that each container of water presents water that includes parts of the ecosystem it was collected from. The placement of each individual sculpture is intentionally placed both in the water and on land. Contrasting the natural environment of Okkenbroek with the domestic materials of metal and glass. Glass allows the color of the water to be affected by the sun and the weather, which gives the sculptures the ability to change. Each sculpture is unique; in size, shape, and color even though the technique of building is the same.

‘Harmony wanted to die’ 2021
Porcelain doll, fake blood, chain, pills
Life is very important to many people; they will undeniably try to survive in any situation. Others prefer to “live life” without the guilt of survival or about how life is precious and valuable. Life and death are unanswered questions. That gives us the freedom to interpret them however we want. Cultures, religions, societies all have their own way of “explaining” death and how life is given. Talking about a higher power, energy, ancestors that have given them the chance to live and that they owe to be grateful. That is not the case for Harmony. Harmony wanted to die. The idea of death was ideal for her. The pain she felt while being alive was too much to handle, death was salvation and the nothingness of it was better than suffering. Thinking about death as a way out, a solution or as a backup plan is more common than you might think. Many people like harmony had death constantly on their minds while trying to do their daily tasks or going through different situations. Life is extremely complicated and can be overwhelming for everyone, which makes coming close to death give you a rush and the key to either keep going or to escape completely.
